What Is Roleplay?
So what is roleplay? Well, there are many definitions of what roleplay is. Many people find roleplay is either one thing or another. Yet like most genres of entertainment and studies, roleplay has developed many. Yet roleplay can be summed up as shown below.
“Roleplay is merely the act of taking on a role of another character or person or playing out events. In many cases, roleplay is encouraged to take form or trait of a person or character that Is unlike yourself. This prevents the blur of the lines of fantasy and reality.”
Yet this statement, quoted by myself of myself ( I know vain right?) does not always hold to absolute truth. While this is generically true. That roleplay in the sense of entertainment is as the statement above states. Roleplay can be a variety of things. It can be going over a job interview, to trying to build empathy by playing out the responses of how your Girlfriend or Boyfriend will react when you tell them something. In short, though it is merely taking on the role of another person or character.
Roleplay is nothing new. It has been around for a while, a few hundred years in fact. However modern-day roleplay is a reference to games and acts of fantasy, where roleplay before was but mere acting. Taking on the role of a character from a book.
Roleplay can be used for a variety of things. I can be used for fun, to help those that have gone through awful things to recover. It can be used as a form of escapism, and yes it can even be used to harm. Here however we will cover the concept of “gaming Role-play.”
“Gaming role-plays” is the act of taking on a character of fantasy, sci-fi or other genre rules. Often this is to play out fantasies such as going on a quest. In some forms of gaming roleplay, people take to being evil where others “righteous warriors for the gods.” Yet no matter what the role it is that you take. Gaming roleplay is to play a central character or characters in an act of fantasy.
Types of Gaming roleplay:
The most common version of gaming roleplay is RPG Video games or Roleplay video games. In a roleplay video game, most don’t need to take on the role. They simply move their cursor, mouse or gamepad and answer questions while going on epic adventures. Some of these forms of roleplay include Final Fantasy, Breath of fire, Dungeons, and dragons.
MMORPG or Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplay is much like a common video game. However, with these, you will also find the act of players taking on a role. They will often back plot where their characters came from and even develop a persona.
Tabletop is probably the most successful form of gaming roleplay out there. With titles like Dungeons and Dragons, many people use this. At least once a week they will gather around a table and assume roles of wizards, warriors, priest and go on campaigns. During this period they will either dress up or not and assume rules of their characters. They will use dice to decide “combat “and situation success. Also during this time, many of them will be refused to be called by their real name for they are “ ogrid the dwarven warrior.” For the night they can forget to be John the Pizza delivery guy.
Forum and chat roleplay also called online roleplay is the act of simply taking the role of the character and embodying their personality. In many forums, text-based systems (Like SEMCS ) is used to solve battles and fights. Some communities (like the shadow empire.) Even host large scale and long-term campaigns.
Cosplay is the act of simply dressing up as a character. People will ordain their personality (sometimes) and go to events such as Comicon and walk about.
Regardless of what your type of gaming roleplay is. Role-play is healthy and should be encouraged. In a world which is plagued by war, death, and destruction. Where all that can be explored has been explored it allows the human imagination to move far beyond its normal realm.
